InteRed drives the digital ecosystem in Panama

In a significant advancement for Panama’s digital ecosystem, InteRed completed connecting three associates to the Internet Exchange Point (IXP) last December, using 100 Gbps ports. This achievement underscores the organization’s commitment to strengthening digital infrastructure, increasing both capacity and Internet traffic in the country.

Internet traffic exchange points have evolved significantly in recent years, becoming critical platforms for more efficient and resilient data exchange. In this context, the incorporation of major Internet providers,  Más Móvil and Tigo, along with content provider GCore, ensures robust capacity to support the growing high-speed Internet access that characterizes Panama. Reports from entities such as Ookla (Rank 32 in fixed and 89 in mobile) and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), where in the Broadband Development Index it ranks 57 globally and 9 in Latin America and the Caribbean, highlight the country’s progress in terms of Internet penetration and quality, consolidating its position as a regional leader in digital development.

InteRed’s Executive Director, Pablo Ruidiaz M., expressed his gratitude to the representatives of the associated companies, Arrigo Guardia (Más Móvil) and Manuel Paz (Tigo), for their trust in the association. This milestone reinforces the importance of public-private collaboration for technological advancement and economic development.

InteRed’s fundamental role in the digital ecosystem

InteRed plays a central role in strengthening Panama’s digital infrastructure.  As a neutral operator of traffic exchange points (IXP), its work facilitates direct interconnection between networks, reducing latency and improving the end-user experience. This model not only promotes operational efficiency but also boosts the country’s competitiveness in the global digital economy.

A 27-year trajectory in the service of innovation

Founded on April 20, 1997, with the support of the National Secretariat of Science, Technology, and Innovation (SENACYT) and the RedHUCyT program of the Organization of American States (OAS), InteRed has 27 years of experience as an interconnection point. During this time, it has consolidated its reputation as a private non-profit organization dedicated to managing the IP traffic exchange node in Panama and promoting related activities that benefit its membership and the digital ecosystem in general.

Its mission goes beyond technical infrastructure, constituting a forum for discussion and agreement to promote the development, expansion, and continuous improvement of the Internet network in
